The great thing about short stories, poems, and novellas, is that they introduce you to a writer’s style in a small space. I couldn’t pick one to talk about, so I’m talking about them all. Here are a few of my favorite short pieces.

Short Stories

The Man Who Ended History: A Documentary, found in The Paper Menagerie by Ken Liu (honorable mention goes to The Literomancer, All the Flavors, and the title story)

Ken Liu presents history and science fiction in a story that knocked me off my feet. This is a great story collection, everyone. Check it out!

Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut

I remember reading this in high school and the themes resonated with me. Sometimes, I’ll catch myself thinking of this story.

Every Heart a Doorway by Seanan McGuire, part of the Wayward Children series

I adore this book for its diverse characters and the possibilities of different worlds it presents. Who as a fantasy lover hasn’t imagined finding a door to a world that speaks to them? I could read a hundred of these books.

Hatchling by Laini Taylor, found in her book Lips Touch Three Times

Laini Taylor is a wordsmith to paints incredible pictures with her writing. This is a dark fantasy that shines with lush language.

Hands down, one of my absolute favorites is The Raven by Edgar Allan Poe. What Poe does with words and rhythm makes this a poem I seek out every Autumn.

  1. Ooh, I had The Raven as a favourite too. And LOVE Laini Taylor. I haven’t read Lips Touch but I’ll be putting it on my to-read list for sure. Thanks!

Same! It’s actually the only work of his I’ve read, now that I think about it. I have to read one of his books.

  2. Poe is one of my favorite all-time authors (I even bought the album “Tales of Mystery and Imagination” by Alan Parsons Project, which is a theme album based on works of Poe). You have some great choices!!
