{Top Ten Tuesday} Ten Books I Struggled With

Posted September 5, 2017 by Liza in Top 10 Tuesday / 11 Comments

Top Ten Tuesday is a meme created by The Broke and the Bookish

So, this week’s TT is a mix of two of the same theme:  Ten Books I Struggled to Get Into But Ended Up Loving and Ten Books that I Struggled with and Ended Up NOT Loving.  Here we go:

Loved These!

The Bone Witch had a lot of mixed reviews, but I happened to love it.  It has a cliffhanger of an ending and the writing is very different, but I loved the MC and the world building.  Another book that was recommended to me over and over was The Demon King.  I probably started the book twice, until Andye suggested that I listen to the audiobooks, and I was hooked!  Red Rising also has a very slow beginning, but please stick with it, it’s an amazing series.

Now, you might be wondering if I’m crazy for struggling with The Fault in Our Stars, but hear me out.  I struggled with getting started because, first, this cover does nothing for me, and second, because of all the hype.  Once started though, I loved it.  I’m not a fan or horror, so I surprised myself for picking The Monstrumologist, however, I ended up loving these characters and the bizarre things they do

These were Just Okay…

Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea was weird.  The prose is beautiful, but the story itself was very strange.  I adore Beauty and the Beast retellings and Cruel Beauty was a fantasy take on it that failed to capture my attention, I just couldn’t identify with the MC and it was also very weird.

Changeling and The Mermaid’s Mirror were both very weird with lackluster MCs and I couldn’t identify with. As many of you, I had to read The Great Gastby for school and it was just awful, I didn’t like the story, the writing or the ending 🙁

Have you read nay of these?  What are some books you’ve struggled with?  What’s in your TTT?

I'm an avid reader (since I learned to read at age four) and a book blogger (since May, 2011).I read mostly YA, but I also read romance, new adult and some middle grade.

Born in Puerto Rico, hola :), military wife for 22-years, and mother of three boys.I work full time doing something else that I love (sadly I don't get paid for reading!)

Right? It was just plain cruelty. I haven’t read Clockwork Orange, but I just looked it up in Goodreads and it sounds awful 🙁

  1. I liked the Bone Witch but I thought it was a bit slower than I expected at times. I am really excited for the second book because of the way things were left at the end tho. I have a feeling that one is going to be awesome. I haven’t read any of the others but The Fault in Our Stars and Cruel Beauty are on my list. Great lists!

I agree that Bone Witch was slow and the writing didn’t flow very well at times, but I still loved the story. I hope book two is amazing!
