"Youβre going to die"
A single text message and Shelley Maranoβs world is upended. A normal high school senior, Shelley discovers she is adopted. She goes on a journey to uncover her past, only to find she was part of a horrific experiment to test the theory of nature versus nurture. In a culture of violence committed by young people, she may be one of these killers. With the lives of her and her friends in the balance, one thing is certain: she will never be the same.
I received this book for free from the publisher or author in exchange for an honest review.
This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

What Lies Within was an interesting story that kept me on the edge of my seat… for the most part. It does have its flaws but in the end I did enjoy it quite a bit.
After a single text, Shelley’s world is turned upside down. After discovering she is adopted, she tries to uncover her past, only to find that she was part of a horrific experiment to test the theory of nature vs nurture. With the lives of her and her friends in the balance, she’s sure or one thing. She will never be the same.
While I did enjoy this book for the most part, I did have some problems with it. But first the positive. This book was very thrilling, fast paced and I kept me on the edge of my seat for the most part. I also liked most of the characters, though it took a bit for all of them to grow on me. The story was interesting and the writing was solid. My main problem with this book was the amount of unanswered questions left at the end. There was so much that wasn’t explained. Mostly the scientific things that would make this whole story plausible. In the end it just left me confused.
In the end this book was pretty enjoyable and I liked it enough to recommend it to friends, but the amount of unanswered questions makes it feel like it didn’t really end. I needed more of a resolution and I didn’t feel like I really got one.

Haha yeah it does. XD
Eek, I don’t like it when there are so many unanswered questions in a book, especially if it’s a standalone. In a series, I can forgive it, but if it’s the end like end-end… then what the heck?! Why would you leave your readers hanging in suspense? I’m quite on the fence about this one…

The author told me there’s another book coming so. π
I wish all the scientific questions were answered, seeing that this is a stand alone. I would be bummed if after all the good points, I’ll be left to wonder what really went on, and how things happened. Maybe a sequel would come out π

There will be a sequel! π

It sounds like it was a really exhilarating read, but a shame that it didn’t get the answers you were looking for. That can be frustrating!

It really is. XD
The nature VS nurture argument is one I have always been intrigued in, so this book sounds awesome! Sorry to hear that some plot points were not resolved, I hate it when that happens, I just feel so incomplete, haha.

Well the author told me there’ll be a sequel so, maybe I’ll get those answers after all. π

I take it this is part of a series then. Even so I absolutely hate open ended or cliffhangers, it’s a big no-no for me.

I don’t mind them as long as there’s a sequel confirmed. And yes, the author told me there’ll be a sequel.
Unanswered questions are so annoying! π I don’t always need things to be tied up in a neat knot but I hate it when there are lose ends (unless there is a sequel in place.)
I am glad that you liked the book overall, Bieke! π

Yeah, me too! If there are lose ends, at least let me know there’s more to come. xD

Oh man. Unanswered questions drive me crazy! I hope that there’s a sequel to answer all your questions and give you a resolution because the book sounds interesting.

I hope so too!
