There’s nothing real about reality TV.

Seventeen-year-old Bonnie™ Baker has grown up on TV—she and her twelve siblings are the stars of one-time hit reality show Baker’s Dozen. Since the show’s cancellation and the scandal surrounding it, Bonnie™ has tried to live a normal life, under the radar and out of the spotlight. But it’s about to fall apart…because Baker’s Dozen is going back on the air. Bonnie™’s mom and the show’s producers won’t let her quit and soon the life she has so carefully built for herself, with real friends (and maybe even a real boyfriend), is in danger of being destroyed by the show. Bonnie™ needs to do something drastic if her life is ever going to be her own—even if it means being more exposed than ever before.

4.5 Stars

So after reading Heather’s upcoming I’ll Meet You There, I knew I had to read this one too. What a good call that was. This book was just as perfect as that one! It’s official people, Heather is on my author auto-buy list. When it comes to contemporary anyway. For now.

Something Real is about Chloe Baker. Her whole life she’s been known as Bonnie™ Baker as part of the hit reality show Baker’s Dozen. Four years ago, the show cancelled suddenly and now four years later, Chloe is starting her senior year and her life finally seems somewhat normal. She has friends who don’t know about her past and she’s fine with that. Until the day the cameras are back. Her life is turned upside down again, even more than before. Even though this time she has sweet Patrick to help her with the stress of her family, Chloe can’t deal with it anymore and something has to change.

Something Real deals with a topic that hasn’t been used in books all that much. Reality TV, how much reality is actually in it and what impact it has on the family. Honestly… I think it’s horrible. The way the treat Chloe is really not fair and I think the whole situation borders on child abuse. There were moments I was crying for Chloe! It was not healthy at all! And it goes against her rights for privacy too. Also, this is the third book in a row where I really hated the mom. And unlike the previous two moms, this one didn’t redeem herself by the end. Which made me hate her more. Who does this to their kids??

One thing Heather does very well is creating very realistic characters that you instantly love (or hate when their stupid and mean). I loved Chloe, Benny, Matt, Patrick, Tess, Mer and Chloe’s teacher Mr. Schwartz! I even loved Chloe’s sister, Lex. I didn’t see enough of her other brothers and sisters to love them, so. Oh and the only reason I’m not calling them by their names from the show is because the TM is annoying. It’s annoying while you read too. It’s distracting. Like I said, I hated her mom. But I also hated Kirk, their stepdad. I loathed Chuck. He was such a bastard. If I had to point out one thing that I didn’t like was that I didn’t get to see Chuck getting what he deserves in the end.

Chloe was a great character. I felt really bad for her! The things they did to her were so unfair and mean! And I hated the fact that her mom didn’t do anything to help her. She just played along. I loved Patrick too! He was so sweet and he’s perfect for Chloe. My favorites are Matt and Benny though. They are so cute together! I loved how Heather didn’t make a big deal out of them being together. They’re so adorable, really.

Something Real is really, really fantastic. If you’re one of those people that hasn’t gotten a copy of I’ll Meet You There and you haven’t read this one yet, I suggest you get started! Buy a copy of this one and read it and love it. Then pre-order I’ll Meet You There if you can! Heather, I love you and thank you for these books. Seriously.
