{Mirror Mirror} The (Slightly Late) March Wrap Up

Posted April 6, 2019 by Leah in Memes & Features, Stacking the Shelves / 8 Comments

Hello, everyone! Wow, we’re already in April. I got crazy busy around the end of March, which is why my March wrap up is a teensy bit late. But here we are and I’m so glad you’re here.

What’s Been Happening

I See Butterflies!

I mentioned before that we had a butterfly migration. It was amazing! Painted lady butterflies were on their way up to Oregon, and the recent heavy rainfalls made Southern California lush and green enough that it drew them by the thousands. Here’s a photo I was able to take of a painted lady butterfly resting on a flower before heading back on the migration route.

Sacramento Hot Take

My parents and I went up to Sacramento for a few days so Mom and I could go see Muse, one of our favorite bands. We stayed in Old Town, which is a throwback to the Gold Rush days. Every street had a candy store and we were close to the Sacramento River. I had a great time. Muse killed it as always with their production, seen below.

Mom and I visited the Capitol Building, which was so cool.

The reason I was so busy is because I was getting ready for WonderCon! The little sibling of San Diego’s Comic-Con, it’s always a fun time there. One of my favorite things is checking out the cosplayers, and they did not disappoint.

A few authors I was excited for were there, too! Kendare Blake (Three Dark Crowns series) and Peter S. Beagle (The Last Unicorn) were special guests, and Jessica Cluess (Kingdom on Fire series) was there, so I got my books signed and even had a fangirl redemption with Peter S. Beagle. Read about it here.

The Reading Blues

I was going through a VERY bad reading slump. I started reading several books that were not working for me (which I’ll talk about in a later post) and it just halted my desire to read. However, I did read a few books that I enjoyed immensely. The slump is still happening, but it’s not a bad as it was. Middle grade has been my go-to in the past few weeks and I’ve been slowly getting back into the swing of things.

What I Read

Biggest Surprise: The Silent Patient. Oh, you super-hyped book. After suspending disbelief within the first two chapters, my enjoyment of this debut jumped up and I was tearing through the pages.

Best Book of the Month: The Bone Sparrow. I don’t know what took me so long to read this one, but it was brutal and beautiful. I want to know why this one wasn’t talked about more.

Book Haul

Just a little one since I’m trying not to go crazy with buying books. Although this month, all bets are off. 🙂

Two Dark Reigns by Kendare Blake

The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon

The Last Unicorn graphic novel by Peter S. Beagle

Hope you’re all doing well! How was your March?

It looks like you had a good time. I had a not-so-good March. My epilepsy seizures flared up again. Book wise, I had several that got finished in April and one DNF.

Oh, I think I know which butterflies you’re talking about. And come on back to California anytime! Happy April!
