hp tuesdays banner Harry Potter Tuesdays is a new event here on Istyria book blog. I’ve wanted to re-read the books for a long time and since I finally got to do it, I decided to make it extra special. I’m going to review each book and compare the book with the movie. I was inspired by Jennifer @ The Bawdy Book Blog when she read these books for the first time and reviewed them on her blog!

4.5 Stars

This review will, of course, have some spoilers. If you have lived under a rock for the past ten years or so, please join the living again. You should have read these books a long time ago.

This is the longest book in the series and it took me so long to finish it. Don’t get me wrong, I love Harry Potter a lot, but I really don’t like the character Harry in this book. He’s grumpy, whiney and depressed and I was frustrated reading about the way he acted around his friends. But this book is also awesome and heart-breaking. This is the darkest book in the series so far and it only gets worse.

In the fifth book, we meet up with Harry in Privet Drive in the summer after he witnessed Cedric Diggory get killed. He’s pissed because he hasn’t heard anything from anyone and he wants to get out of there. When he finally sees them again, he’s still frustrated and angry. Harry has to go on a trial for using magic, which was only because he had to fight of dementors that were attacking him and Dudley. Of course, he gets to go to Hogwarts anyway, but it promises to be a weird year. Doloris Umbridge enters the story and she works for the Minister of Magic. A lot changes at Hogwarts and Harry, Ron and Hermione start the D.A., Dumbledore’s Army, so that they can practice Defense against the Dark Arts with other students in secret. And all that is going on while Voldemort is trying to gain power once again.

Like I said, I didn’t like the way Harry acted around his friends in this book. I get it, he’s angry and frustrated because nobody believes him and all that, but you don’t have to be pissed and grumpy to the few people that do believe you and want to help you… I really like the start of the D.A. and I hate Umbridge. She’s scarier than Voldemort… And someone dies. Again. And this time it’s my favorite character in the series. Sigh.

Fred and George quit school to start their own shop and Ginny is growing up to be a cool girl that can kick your ass if she needs to. I like how Hermione makes all those clothes for the house elves, even though I’m not sure if it works or not. I love the fact that we get some more background on Neville and I feel so bad for him!

That’s it for now on the fifth book. Keep on reading for my thoughts on the movie!

The book vs. The movie

Directed by David Yates
Produced by David Heyman, David Barron
Music by Nicholas Hooper
Released on 11 July 2007 (US), 12 July 2007 (UK)

If you just watch this as a movie thinking of the book, it’s a great movie and a great sequel. The acting is great, the music is great, the story is awesome. But when you do think of the book… It’s not as good. They left out so many important things! And they changed so much! Again!

They left out a lot about Neville, again. I hate that the most. But I do like the D.A. even though they left out the coin thing. They left out Hermione and her S.P.E.W., which is also stupid. And there’s almost no Quidditch in this movie anymore. But the end still broke my heart.

The acting has gotten better and like I said, if you just watch the movie, it’s great. But if you compare it, it’s a pretty bad adaption in my eyes, but still I think David Yates did a great job.
