The flames of civil war sweep across the Shima Imperium. With their plans to renew the Kazumitsu dynasty foiled, the Lotus Guild unleash their deadliest creation—a mechanical goliath known as the Earthcrusher, intended to unite the shattered Empire under a yoke of fear. With the Tiger Clan and their puppet Daimyo Hiro in tow, the Guild marches toward a battle for absolute dominion over the Isles.

Yukiko and Buruu are forced to take leadership of the Kagé rebellion, gathering new allies and old friends in an effort to unite the country against the chi-mongers. But the ghosts of Buruu’s past stand between them and the army they need, and Kin’s betrayal has destroyed all trust among their allies. When a new foe joins the war tearing the Imperium apart, it will be all the pair can do to muster the strength to fight, let alone win.

The traitor Kin walks the halls of Guild power, his destiny only a bloody knife-stroke away. Hana and Yoshi struggle to find their place in a world now looking to them as heroes. Secret cabals within the Lotus Guild claw and struggle; one toward darkness, the other toward light. And as the earth splits asunder, as armies destroy each other for rule over an empire of lifeless ash and the final secret about blood lotus is revealed, the people of Shima will learn one last, horrifying truth.

There is nothing a mother won't do to keep her children by her side.

5 Stars

I’ll be honest, this will not be a long review, partly because I’ll start spoiling the story if I say everything I want to say and partly because my heart can’t take it anymore.

First off, I’d like to say that Jay Kristoff is a magnificent writer! He’s one of the few authors that can make me laugh, cry, scream, rage and depressed all in one book. That’s quite a feat in my eyes. Not to mention that his writing, just has a way of immersing a reader and feeling everything the characters feel. Well, as I said I had so many feels while reading Endsinger and left me sad and depressed in the end.

The story, well what can I say that hasn’t already been said? It was awesome, action-packed and heartbreaking. I don’t know anyone who wasn’t completely heartbroken when they read the ending of Endsinger. I mean seriously, View Spoiler »? I cried a goddamn river when I read that scene, I just couldn’t stop. I mean, who can, after reading that?!

Anyway, the characters of course were just as awesome as in the previous books, and Yukiko was even more badass and so was Michi, though I was a bit sad to see what happened to her, stupid Hiro. Also we’ve got Hana, who bonds with Kaiah and I think those two are incredible together, almost as much as Yukiko and Buruu are. I loved their interaction with each other which is quite different from Yukiko and Buruu. Also those Gaijin troops were badass, it’s pity we didn’t get to see more of their culture, which was interesting from what I could gleam from the books.

All in all, this book was amazing, but a definite heartbreaker. You have all been warned, I recommend when you read Endsinger, that you keep a box of tissues on hand. You’re gonna need it.
