Bookish Babble: Writing Contemporary Books

Bookish Babble is a feature created by me, Bieke. In these posts I talk about bookish topics (sometimes not so bookish…) and ask for your opinion on the matter! I love hearing from you guys and I love discussion topics, so in these posts I’ll just talk about what comes to my mind and hope you’ll give your opinion. If there is something you want to talk about here on Bookish Babble, fill out the contact form on this page.

Writing Contemporary Books

Everyone knows reading contemporary can make you an emotional wreck. Any genre can if the book is good, but especially contemporary. Why? Perhaps because it’s more realistic than say a paranormal book. Contemporary book can hit very close to home and reading books like that… It makes you a crying, sobbing mess. But did you know that writing them is even harder?

If you didn’t know, I’m currently working on my first book under the name Nelly B. Jones. I’m working on a YA Fantasy series, which I have all planned out already. But I’m working on this side project as well. A YA Contemporary. And it hits really really close to home. I don’t know how to make it more personal. Most parts of the story are things that happened in my life. Actually it’s a few years of my life mushed into one book. I changed some things, like something happened earlier in my real life than it happens in the book for example. And while my awesome, always supportive best friend is there for me all the time, it’s still hard. I’m revisiting memories I stuffed away in a dark corner of my mind. I’m reliving all those things over again and yes, it hurts like hell.

This gave me a new found respect for authors that write Contemporary books. You know, those that make you such a mess. Next time you’re reading one of those books, stop for a minute and think how much of a mess the author must have been writing this. Honestly, I hope I survive writing this book. But I need to do it. I need to tell that story. I already contacted someone for the cover. It’s way early and I won’t be ordering one until next year, but I thought it’d be good to have the right person for the project. I wasn’t sure she’d be up for it, but she is and I’m so excited to work with Ashley (Nose Graze & Creative Whim) next year!
