Bookish Babble: I’m not a fan of horror

Bookish Babble is a feature created by me, Bieke. In these posts I talk about bookish topics (sometimes not so bookish…) and ask for your opinion on the matter! I love hearing from you guys and I love discussion topics, so in these posts I’ll just talk about what comes to my mind and hope you’ll give your opinion. If there is something you want to talk about here on Bookish Babble, fill out the contact form on this page.

I’m not a fan of horror… I’m just not.

With Halloween fast approaching, everyone is getting in the mood by watching their favorite horror movies and/or reading their favorite horror books. But to be completely honest… I’m not a fan of horror. Sure I watch a horror movie when I’m in the mood for it, but it’s not my favorite genre. It’s just not. The biggest reason for that is probably that I scare very easy and after watching a horror movie I sleep bad for days. I jump at the slightest sound and I put lights on in every room I walk passed. So I don’t read horror books either. The closest thing to horror I’ve read is Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake. I hate being scared. So that’s why you probably won’t see a review of a horror book on Halloween here on my blog.

What I do like is thrillers every now and then. Mystery thrillers, psychological thrillers, paranormal thrillers,… I enjoy those from time to time. Especially now around halloween. That’s probably the closest I will get to reviewing more horror on this blog. Out of the 124 books on my waiting-for-release shelf on Goodreads, there’s only 1 horror book. And even that comes closer to paranormal thriller than horror.

I used to devour the books by Nicci French. I loved those books! I haven’t read any of their (because it’s two people writing under one name) books since I started blogging though. I also love Karin Slaughters books. Detective thrillers. I have a bunch of thrillers on my ereader too. And in my opinion, thrillers can be very scary too if they’re written well enough.

My favorites at the moment? The Naturals series by Jennifer Lynn Barnes. Highly recommended! It’s like Criminal Minds meets The Mentalist for teens. It’s awesome.

So how about you? Are you a horror fan or do you prefer thrillers, like me?

  1. I never never never watch a horror movie if I don’t have to. I hate them! They give me nightmares and I get really scared, I don’t like that feeling. I don’t mind reading thriller books though. For some reason I don’t get badly triggered if I read it.

  2. I am in total agreement with you Bee! I can’t do horror either because I scare easily too. Even the commercials scare me… right now there are all these advertisements on TV for this movie Annabelle with a possessed psychotic doll and they scare the $*** out of me LOL 🙂 I don’t do the books either, although my Dad is a huge Stephen King and I did read a few from his collection years ago.

  3. I’m like you, only a tad worse. I can’t watch horror. At all. I won’t sleep bad for days, I’ll sleep bad for months, thinking they’re after me (even if they died at the end). I can watch thrillers though.

As for reading, I can read anything, because I’m not a very visual reader. I just can’t watch graphic violence and gore.
