Candace Bristol has always been obsessed with comic books, but in a world where the nightly news often mirrors these inked stories, her dreams of becoming a real superhero could actually come true. After being rescued by members of the government’s AdvaNced Genetic EvoLution (ANGEL) Project four years ago, getting recruited for this elite team is all she's wanted.

Now 18, she's finally reached her goal after years of study and physical training, but little could have prepared her for life as a genetic experiment. As though coming to terms with her new ability to manipulate water isn't tough enough, she never expected to be swept off her feet by one of her fellow recruits.

With genetic alteration, the threat of physical and mental instability hangs over every superhero like a shadow. When one of their own tumbles over the edge of madness, Candace will have to choose between protecting the world, and saving the one who holds her heart.

I received this book for free from the publisher or author in exchange for an honest review.

Review

Wow. To be honest, for most of the time, like 70 or 80%, it seemed like it would end up as a 2-star book. It really did. But then that last 30-20%… Wow. It was so heartbreaking and terrifying and I was glued to the pages every single word. And then it ended… Sigh. Why do books have endings again?

Candace Bristol lives in my perfect world. A world where superheroes are real. 4 years ago, she was rescued by a member of the government’s AdvaNced Genetic EvoLution (ANGEL) Project. Since then, all she’s wanted is to be recruited for this elite team of superheroes. When she’s 18, she’s reached her goal and is off to become a superhero. But it doesn’t go like she initially thought it would. She has to deal with her new powers to manipulate water and crazy hormones due to the treatment. And when one of their own is on the edge of madness, Candace has to choose between protecting the world and the one who holds her heart.
I think my main problem with this book was that I did not know the romance would be so big. I expected a bad ass book full of cool superhero action. And there is some of that, but there’s a lot of romance too. If I had known that, I would have enjoyed the book more! The second thing was the conversations… I don’t know, in the first half they were kind of weird. I can’t describe it. But it got better! But I really loved the overall story. Is it a bit predictable? Maybe, but that’s because the blurb gives away a lot when you read it over once you’ve started the book and are about 30% in.

The romance, although I did not expected it to be so big of a part in the story, was really good. I really loved it and the end was just heartbreaking and terrifying! For a while, I thought it would be a love triangle, but it wasn’t, so that’s good.

The superpowers. I need to talk about those. They were awesome and I’ll talk about it in more detail in a moment, but first I need to explain the ANGEL Project. Basically, it’s an organization from the government. A guy found a way to give someone superpowers by giving them some sort of treatment that alters your DNA. They do not know beforehand what that power will be. Once your 18, you can sign up with them and maybe become a superhero. Who wouldn’t want that? I would!

Candace gets the power to manipulate water. And when she’s using her power, it’s really cool! But there’s also a side of it that’s terrifying because it’s so much power she has in her hands and if she looses control or her will-power just a few seconds… I loved Candace. I really did. She’s a comic book nerd and I get that. She’s obsessed with superheroes and superpowers. I get that! THAT’S ME! Only I would not have her power. Mine would be fire. Absolutely. Speaking of fire, Jackson! He’s an ass most of this book and though I kind of expected why, it’s not really revealed until the last chapter, the epilogue. I’m not really sure what his power is, only that it has to do something with fire. But even though he’s mean and stupid most of the time, I did like him. He grew on me. Then you have Gabe, Candace’s cousing, and True and a bunch of other side characters. I liked them all, I really did. Superheroes are the best. And then, last but not least, Adrian. Candace’s love interest. I really liked him and I felt for him! And the end… It crushed me.

If I had known how big of a part the romance would play in this book, I would have loved this book. But I did not, sadly. I don’t really expect a great romance in a superhero book you know? I want them to kick ass with their powers! But still, now you’ve read this review and you know and if you love superpowers and superheroes with a great romance, this is the perfect book for you. BUT! Be warned for that the ending. And the damned sort of cliffhanger! Next book! Now!

  1. Great review and I do love super powers. Not so much with the romance, but sometimes it works out great anyway. I love the thought of a super power manipulating water. I am drawn to lakes, gulfs, seas and oceans, so this book appeals to my water side. Pretty cover too.
