Magic was seeping out of me, black and agonizing. I could see it drifting away. The magic that would let me pass the Road to reach home again.

When sixteen-year-old Anya learns that her aunt, Queen of the Faerie Kingdom of Chrior, will soon die, her grief is equaled only by her despair for the future of the kingdom. Her young cousin, Illumina, is unfit to rule, and Anya is determined not to take up the queen's mantle herself.

Convinced that the only solution is to find Prince Zabriel, who long ago disappeared into the human realm of Warckum, and persuade him to take up his rightful crown, Anya journeys into the Warckum Territory to bring him home. But her journey is doomed to be more harrowing than she ever could have imagined…

Years ago, when I didn’t have my blog yet, I got my very first book for review and it was the debut novel of this author. I really liked that book and I still have it here on my shelves. And then I saw this book on Netgalley! It looked great and the blurb sounded good! True, I was a bit hesitant about the fairies, but I wanted to give it a try nonetheless.

When Anya learns that her aunt, Queen of the Faerie Kingdom of Chrior, will die soon, she doesn’t know what to feel the most. Grief or despair for the future of the kingdom. Her cousin is unfit to rule and Anya doesn’t want to take the throne. The only solution is to find Prince Zabriel, who disappeared into the human realm long ago and somehow persuade him to take the throne. But Anya couldn’t possibly imagine that her journey is doomed to be more harrowing than she thought it would be.

First of all, I really liked the world Cayla created. The world building was great and I love the little map in the beginning of the book. I love maps! And I love the faeries here! They have wings! Fairies in books rarely have wings and honestly, I hate that. But these do and I’m just so happy about that! The writing was good, but it felt a little stiff and formal in the beginning. It took me a while to get used to that. But it wasn’t bad, not at all! I’m just not used to this writing style.

I liked the characters too. I liked Anya, she’s a good main character and it’s not hard to like her. But the rest too of course. The romance was just… meh. I didn’t really care about it to be honest. And the end… Give me book 2 okay? You can’t end a book like that.

It’s obvious Cayla has improved her writing and I still like her as an author. I definitely will read the second book! I recommend this book to fans of the genre. Especially fans of fairy books!
