A lush and gorgeously written debut, packed with action, intrigue, and a thrilling love triangle.

Alexa Hollen is a fighter. Forced to disguise herself as a boy and serve in the king's army, Alex uses her quick wit and fierce sword-fighting skills to earn a spot on the elite prince's guard. But when a powerful sorcerer sneaks into the palace in the dead of night, even Alex, who is virtually unbeatable, can't prevent him from abducting her, her fellow guard and friend Rylan, and Prince Damian, taking them through the treacherous wilds of the jungle and deep into enemy territory.

The longer Alex is held captive with both Rylan and the prince, the more she realizes that she is not the only one who has been keeping dangerous secrets. And suddenly, after her own secret is revealed, Alex finds herself confronted with two men vying for her heart: the safe and steady Rylan, who has always cared for her, and the dark, intriguing Damian. With hidden foes lurking around every corner, is Alex strong enough to save herself and the kingdom she's sworn to protect?

Although it started off good, in the end I felt like I expected I would. I was scared to death because of that one sentence about a ‘thrilling love triangle’ in the blurb. (There’s no such thing as a thrilling love triangle.) Ultimately it wasn’t that bad, but I did feel like the romance took over a bit.

I really liked Alexa in the beginning. It felt a bit like Mulan and I love that movie from Disney. But just like I said, the romance took over a bit, which is a shame because this book would have been kick ass if the romance was just a background thing. This is a great book when you want a fun fantasy with romance in it. If it doesn’t bother you that the romance is a big part of it anyway. If you don’t want that romance aspect in it, I’m not sure whether you’ll like it or not.

As for the love triangle, it didn’t really feel like one for me personally, so it wasn’t that big of an issue as I thought it would be. And that’s a good thing! The writing was good too. I just… would’ve like more awesome action and butt-kicking from Alexa instead of the romance. It took away things like character development, world-building, … As soon as it really started, I started disliking Alexa. I didn’t really get the action that was mentioned in the blurb, unfortunately.

I expected a book with an awesome main character like Celaena in Throne of Glass, but I was led down. This is a Young Adult Fantasy Romance book. It’s not high-fantasy and the romance plays a big role in it.

And seriously, there’s no such thing as a thrilling love triangle.
